It’s Phonics Friday with Your Friends on the Safari!

The soft sounds of “c” and “g”…

Gene was a giraffe, who lived in a zoo.
He had a huge cage, but Gene was always blue.
Gene missed the plains, where he could run free.
(Such a lonely life, for Gene with soft “g”.)

The consonants “c” and “g” make two sounds – a hard sound and a soft sound. Do you know the rule for the soft sounds of “c” and “g”? Our Tour Guide does and he wants to teach it to you and your safari mate. Listen to track #23 of our music CD or watch the video entitled, the Soft C and G Song on our Expeditions to Excellence website or by clicking here, where we’ve posted it on our blog page. It goes this way: “If you find a “c” or a “g” when you’re reading, before and “e”, “i” or “y” here’s what they say: the “c” will make the “ssss” sound and the “g” will sound like “j”. Reading Expeditions 55, 56, 57 and 58 teach this concept in full detail. Come join the safari!

It’s Fabulous!

Lights, camera, action! Everyone knows how much children love videos. They love seeing themselves on television even more. Why not make them the STAR? As your safari mate is becoming more and more proficient at reading, be sure to make home videos of his or her progress. Afterward, sit down and watch the videos together. It won’t take long for a big smile to appear. Videotaping your child reading our Power Readers or bedtime stories is a fun way to document success at every reading level. You’ll enjoy looking back one day and realize just how valuable your time and teaching were, in the years gone by. Also, encourage your reader to share the videos with relatives, friends and peers. Some things are too good to keep to yourself!
