It’s Never Too Early to Learn These Particulars – Never!

Of the twenty-six phonics and readiness songs featured in Expeditions to Excellence, few are as important as this one song: Where Do You Live? If your child were lost for any reason whatsoever or, if you were suddenly separated or faced with an emergency or an accident, would he or she know your address and phone number? It’s never too early to learn. Let us help.

It’s Fun!

Everyone’s address and phone number is unique. That’s why our readiness song entitled, “Where Do You Live?” focuses on modeling the behavior every young child needs to learn, in order to tell other people their address and phone number in times of need.

Take a look at the simple lyrics:

“Where do you live? Do you know where you live? Can you answer all these questions for me? What is your name and where is your home? What’s your number and your city and street? And do you know your telephone number? You can learn it so easily. Where do you live? Do you know where you live? If you don’t, ask someone for me.”

Throughout the song, are children reciting their names, addresses and phone numbers. In this season of family activities, outdoor water parks, camping and other outside play, take some time to watch this video together and to make sure that your little one knows how to talk about this important information. It’s never too early!

Teaching your child to dial 911 in an emergency, talking with them about more than “stranger danger” and making sure they know how to give someone information about their address, parent names and phone numbers are critical skills.

In Reading Expedition #23, we suggest that you listen to the Where Do You Live? Song and then ask your little safari mate to draw a picture of his or her home. Print the address beside it and, together, learn to say it aloud until it is memorized. Do the same thing with your phone number. Then, talk about what to do in the case of an emergency.

It’s Fabulous!

Kidshealth.org provides wonderful information about how to talk with your child about emergency situations. Fire? Attempted break-in? Does your child know what to do? Here’s what they say:

“Not that long ago, there was a separate telephone number for each type of emergency agency. For a fire, you called the fire department; for a crime, you called the police; for a medical situation, you called an ambulance or doctor.

But now 911 is a central number for all types of emergencies. An emergency dispatch operator quickly takes information from the caller and puts the caller in direct contact with whatever emergency personnel are needed, thus making response time quicker.

According to the National Emergency Number Association, 911 covers nearly all of the population of the United States, but check your phone book or go online to be sure that 911 is the emergency number to use in your area.

Everyone needs to know about calling 911 in an emergency. But kids also need to know the specifics about what an emergency is. Asking them questions like, “What would you do if we had a fire in our house?” or “What would you do if you saw someone trying to break in?” gives you a chance to discuss what constitutes an emergency and what to do if one occurs. Role playing is an especially good way to address various emergency scenarios and give your kids the confidence they’ll need to handle them.

For younger children, it might also help to talk about who the emergency workers are in your community — police officers, firefighters, paramedics, doctors, nurses, and so on — and what kinds of things they do to help people who are in trouble. This will clarify not only what types of emergencies can occur, but also who can help.”
